April is showers-and-chocolate month – Easter eggs in the cupboard, the clocks gone forward and weather that can’t make up its mind. So this box hedged its bets: two low-sugar chocolate bars for the Easter mood, a big bag of cheese and onion for a rainy weekend, a cactus water for the sunny bits, and a lot of crunch in between. Almost every one of the 20 snacks is plant-based, and most are gluten-free too. Here’s what was inside 🐣
Our mini snack boxes contain a selection of items from the full size box.
Savoury
Human Nature Pea Rings – Smoky BBQ (50g)
What it is: Light, crunchy rings made from 47% pea flour and maize flour, seasoned with a smoky barbecue blend of paprika, chipotle and tomato.
Why we picked it: Mostly pea rather than potato, with a sweet-smoky seasoning that does a good impression of the crisp-aisle classic.
Dietary: Vegan. May contain gluten, milk and sulphur dioxide.
Proper Crunch Corn – Barbecue (45g)
What it is: Crunchy roasted corn kernels seasoned with sweet, smoky chipotle and a twist of tomato tang, in a 45g bag.
Why we picked it: High in fibre, one of the crunchiest things in the box, and the chipotle has a proper smoky sweetness to it.
Dietary: Vegan, gluten-free. May contain soya.
Simply Roasted Low Fat Crisps – Sea Salt & Cider Vinegar (21.5g)
What it is: Thick-cut potato slices roasted under high heat rather than fried, then dusted with sea salt and Suffolk cider vinegar.
Why we picked it: Back from March because it earned it: under 100 calories, 50% less fat and salt, and a proper chip-shop tang.
Dietary: Vegan, gluten-free.
Long Chips – Cheese & Onion (75g) ★ sharing bag
What it is: Extra-long baked chips of potato flakes and wheat semolina, coated in a cheese and onion seasoning made with yogurt powder.
Why we picked it: Ruler-length chips in a 75g bag, baked and lower in fat than crisps, and the flavour is a British classic done properly.
Dietary: Vegetarian (contains milk). Contains gluten and mustard.
Total XP Protein Crunch – Chilli Hotness (28g)
What it is: A crunchy, low-carb protein snack made with milk protein, with 13g of protein in a 28g pack and a proper chilli kick.
Why we picked it: 13g of protein in a small bag is hard to argue with, and it’s hot enough that you notice it.
Dietary: Vegetarian (contains milk), gluten-free.
Mister Free’d Tortilla Chips – Cheese (40g)
What it is: Corn tortilla chips with a vegan cheese seasoning built on nutritional yeast, rice flour and natural flavourings, in a 40g bag.
Why we picked it: A cheesy tortilla chip with no dairy in it, high in fibre, and a short enough ingredients list to read out loud.
Dietary: Vegan, gluten-free.
Marigold Popcorn Plus – B12 (20g)
What it is: Popcorn sprinkled with Engevita nutritional yeast flakes and sea salt, which gives it a cheesy taste without any cheese, in a 20g bag.
Why we picked it: Not many snacks are high in B12 and vitamin D, and fewer still are popcorn.
Dietary: Vegan, gluten-free.
Palse Crunchy Fava Beans – Sweet Paprika
What it is: Whole fava beans, also known as broad beans, roasted until crunchy and seasoned with sweet paprika.
Why we picked it: Fibre and protein in a bean that keeps its crunch long after a crisp has gone soft.
Dietary: Vegan, gluten-free.
Real Naturals Edamame Pops – Salt & Vinegar (26g)
What it is: Roasted edamame beans, 90% of the pack, with a salt and vinegar seasoning, in a 26g bag.
Why we picked it: Edamame is mostly protein, so this is a salt-and-vinegar hit that fills you up rather than just making you thirsty.
Dietary: Vegan, gluten-free. Contains soya.
Sweet
Neoh Crunch Bar – Coconut (30g)
What it is: A 30g bar with a coconut filling, crispy protein centre and milk chocolate coating, sweetened with erythritol and fibre rather than sugar.
Why we picked it: 1g of sugar and 7.5g of protein in something that eats like a Bounty, which felt like a fair Easter compromise.
Dietary: Vegetarian (contains milk). Contains tree nuts, gluten, soya and lupin.
Yup! Oats With Granola – Cherry & Almond (65g) ★ sharing bag
What it is: A microwave-ready pot of wholegrain oats topped with cherry-flavoured granola, white chocolate chunks and almonds, in a 65g pot.
Why we picked it: Breakfast for the mornings that go wrong, and the granola topping means it doesn’t turn into wallpaper paste.
Dietary: Vegetarian (contains milk and honey). Contains gluten, soya and almonds; may contain peanuts and other tree nuts.
Presteez Fruit & Nut Bar – Fig & Pistachio (35g)
What it is: A pressed bar of dried apricot, 20% pistachios, almonds, fig, mango and pineapple, with chicory fibre and no added sugar.
Why we picked it: No added sugar or sweeteners, high in fibre, and the pistachio gives it a more grown-up flavour than most fruit bars.
Dietary: Vegan, gluten-free. Contains tree nuts; may contain peanuts, sesame and soya.
Creative Nature Fruit Oatie Bar – Blueberry Muffin (30g)
What it is: A soft oaty bar of gluten-free oats, apricots, sultanas, dates and blueberries, with a natural blueberry and vanilla flavour.
Why we picked it: Free from all 14 major allergens, so it’s the bar we reach for when someone in the office can’t eat anything else.
Dietary: Vegan, gluten-free.
Bear Fruit Snack Pack – Mango & Passionfruit (31g)
What it is: Pieces of 90% dried mango with passionfruit puree and lime juice, baked low and slow, in a 31g pack.
Why we picked it: One of your five a day, high in fibre, no added sugar, and the sort of thing that goes in the lunchbox first.
Dietary: Vegan, gluten-free.
Pip & Nut Peanut Butter Stuffed Oat Bar – Apple Cinnamon (48g)
What it is: A soft wholegrain oat bar stuffed with 22% peanut butter, sweetened with date and rice syrup and flavoured with apple and cinnamon.
Why we picked it: Apple and cinnamon in a peanut butter bar sounds odd until you try it, and then it’s the breakfast you keep buying.
Dietary: Vegan. Contains peanuts and tree nuts; may contain gluten.
Eat Curious Plant-Based Protein Bar – Apple & Cinnamon (38g)
What it is: A plant-based protein bar flavoured with apple and cinnamon, made with barley, oats and wheat, high in fibre and low in fat.
Why we picked it: Plant protein with hardly any sugar or fat, and it tastes more like a breakfast bar than a gym bar.
Dietary: Vegan. Contains gluten (barley, oats and wheat).
Nick’s Protein Wafer – Hazelnut (40g)
What it is: A crispy wafer bar with a hazelnut-flavoured milk protein filling and a 40% gluten-free milk chocolate coating, sweetened with erythritol.
Why we picked it: The hazelnut is the flavour people ask for by name: 25% protein, no added sugar, and it still tastes like a treat.
Dietary: Vegetarian (contains milk), gluten-free. Contains tree nuts and soya; may contain peanuts.
Pop Yum Popcorn – Butterscotch (23g)
What it is: Popcorn coated in a sweet butterscotch glaze, in a 23g bag that comes to around 120 calories.
Why we picked it: About 120 calories for the whole bag and dairy-free despite the name, so butterscotch is back on the menu.
Dietary: Vegan, gluten-free.
Drinks
Cacto Prickly Pear Water – Ruby Pineapple
What it is: A lightly sparkling drink made from prickly pear cactus fruit and pineapple juice, with a deep pink colour from the fruit itself.
Why we picked it: Prickly pear is naturally rich in electrolytes and antioxidants, and it was our one properly unusual drink of the month.
Dietary: Vegan, no gluten-containing ingredients.
Activit Sparkling Vitamin Water – Mango & Passionfruit (330ml)
What it is: Carbonated spring water flavoured with mango and passionfruit, with eight added vitamins and minerals and sweetened with sucralose.
Why we picked it: Three calories a can, no caffeine, and a full day’s vitamin C, D and B12 in a drink that isn’t a supplement.
Dietary: Vegetarian, gluten-free.
Nut note: This month the Neoh coconut bar, Yup! Oats pot, Presteez Fig & Pistachio bar, Pip & Nut oat bar and Nick’s hazelnut wafer contain nuts or peanuts, and nothing else in the box carries a “may contain nuts” warning.
